Mary McDonnell reacts to Major Crimes cancellation, TNT’s decision
We’re not going to pretend at CarterMatt to know the complexities of a major network since we’re not there and not looking at the numbers. Nonetheless, we don’t think personally that the show got much of a fair shake over the past year and feel like TNT is moving too far away from what made it successful in the first place — crime dramas. They’re not embracing their older viewers, and while some of their new shows like Claws are very much entertaining, that doesn’t mean that some old favorites are any less show.
As series star Mary McDonnell points out in a post on Instagram (see below), some of the recent TNT decisions helped to make it clear that the writing was on the wall for Major Crimes for a rather long time. She could see the cancellation coming even if she and the rest of the team didn’t want to; the only thing that we have some hope for when it comes to closure is that the writers likely wrote the finale knowing that the fate of the show was up in the air. Hopefully we’ll be happy with what happens early next year (check out the series finale date here) as a result of that.
It’s extremely disappointing see Major Crimes end like this, especially since it does still feel too soon — nonetheless, there is a reason to remain grateful given that so few cable shows make it to 100 episodes these days and this is a great testament to some of the devoted fans who really fought hard in order to keep the show around. We’re sure James Duff and the team have some great stories planned out for the end.
