More details on Riverdale spin-off Chilling Adventures of Sabrina surface

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is one of the most interesting potential series coming during the 2018-19 season and for many reasons. For one, it’s a spin-off of Riverdale, one of the more-popular shows on The CW. Beyond that, we’re also talking about an adaptation of a property that does already have a little bit of buzz out there about it. Just remember for a moment here that we already have Sabrina, the Teenage Witch in existence.

Judging from the first script page posted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa on Twitter (see below), this version of Sabrina is going to be very different from the Melissa Joan Hart series. It’s going to be considerably darker, she will be a little more open with her secret (at least at first), and the show’s going to fit tonally with Riverdale. As for how much of the supernatural is going to navigate over to that show, it remains to be seen; the relationship that we’re building in our mind with this show is similar to Pretty Little Liars and its spin-off Ravenswood, which focused a good bit more on the strange and supernatural.

If there’s one person qualified to take on this series, it is Aguirre-Sacasa, who has experience writing in both the Sabrina and Archie worlds for the comics before even getting the showrunner gig that he’s got now.

As for whether or not The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will happen, we’re absolutely still in far-too-early-to-tell territory. The biggest thing we know right now is that there’s promise here, but much could depend on how Riverdale fares in its second season. Despite some of its critical acclaim and hype the show was only okay at best in its season 1 ratings; The CW is still showing enough confidence in it that it’s giving the show its own night alongside Dynasty. They realize that they’ve become much more male-centric as of late thanks to all of their different superhero shows, and they do want to continue to find some ways to appeal to female viewers who are out there. Sabrina could certainly do that provided that the show actually lands. (One other thing to remember here is that The CW has one of the most-crowded network schedules out there — we do think that they should seriously consider programming Sundays again, given that there could be a market there for them.)

One way or another, we’re probably going to know about the future of this show come in the spring, prior to when some of the networks have their big upfront presentations in New York City. The weeks before that are often decision time.
