Supergirl season 3 spoilers: Meet Samantha Arias a.k.a. Reign’s mother
According to TVInsider, Betty Buckley, whose credits include Pretty Little Liars along with The Leftovers and the original Broadway production of Cats, is going to be appearing starting in the seventh episode of the season (entitled “Wake Up”) as Patricia Arias. She and her daughter Samantha Clayton (played by Odette Annable, and pictured above with her own daughter) have been estranged for many years, but it turns out that Patricia may have a little more of a connection and understanding of her daughter’s origins than even she does. Given the episode’s title, is it possible that Patricia could awaken in Samantha something that brings out her inner Worldkiller? It seems that way, given that at the start of the season it feels as though she’s not going have it even on her mind that she could have an alter ego who is out to destroy.
What makes Samantha so interesting, and terrifying, as a villain is that she is so completely unaware of what she is really capable of. Her goals when she arrives on the scene may just be to create a good life for herself and her daughter, but when she is activated, it’s hard to know if there is anything that is going to be able to extract that part of her from her mind. This whole story is about the birth of a supervillain, and it is one of the most powerful and terrifying ones that we’ve had a chance to see on the show in three seasons.
Through the first part of the season, our main excitement level at CarterMatt will be based on the development of this character. A good model for them to follow would be Slade Wilson on Arrow, arguably the entire superhero franchise’s best villain when it comes to development from start to finish. There was a time when he was an ally — and ironically, there could be a time when he becomes one again.
