American Horror Story: Cult episode 4 preview; the latest ratings update
As we look ahead to American Horror Story: Cult episode 4, we really hope there are no more guinea pigs. Also, we hope that the show does continue to find unique ways to show off Kai’s terrifying influence and some of the near-constant devastation that Ally seems to have going on in her life. She’s lucky that she wasn’t charged over the shooting, and her personal life is now in shambles over the Winter “incident” — to put it mildly.
So where is the story going moving into episode 4? Well, the preview video below absolutely suggests that Kai will be continuing to throw a little bit more of his power around on Billy Eichner’s character, and this show will somehow figure out in the process a way to go increasingly off the rails. While there is a little too much going on with some of the various storylines at the moment, we do appreciate the show trying to be ambitious. It’s not as convoluted as American Horror Story: Hotel, so it does at least have that going for it.
We just wish that the show actually gave a little bit more away in the preview other than a series of violent, scary moments — including the word “fantastic” said in quite possibly the creepiest voice possible. If you love the show, or even if you love/hate the show, there is still a ton of great stuff in here to like.
As for the state of the latest American Horror Story: Cult ratings, let’s just say that our recent CarterMatt prediction was right about the show falling off a cliff in week two. The first episode of the season generated a 2.0 in the 18-49 demographic, whereas the second posted just a 1.2. Did this many people really bail on Cult after just one episode? We don’t think so. The show probably did lose some viewers, and then faced a situation where some of the others flocked over to DVR and didn’t feel the need to watch the show live anymore.
The good news and bad news is this. While Cult to date is actually averaging higher ratings than all of American Horror Story: Roanoke, that average is very much front-loaded because of the strong performance of the premiere. The second episode of last season actually generated a 1.8 rating, and there was only one episode of Roanoke that actually performed worse. Consider this arguably one of the first times that we’ve started to see the American Horror Story franchise showed some vulnerability. Maybe the subject matter this time around hurt the show, or maybe this is actually a case of the show just being so far into its run. At this point, many viewers out there do know what to expect.
