Will Outlander season 3 episode 2 stay strong versus Emmys?

Outlander season 3 episode 2

Tonight, Outlander season 3 episode 2 is coming on the air over on Starz, and once again it has some unusual circumstances that could play a role in its ratings.

Last week, the Starz drama had to take on the challenge of coming on the air at a time in which many viewers were, understandably, dealing with more important things than television in certain parts of the world. The network has already estimated that the premiere lost a good chunk of its live+same-day viewership for the first episode because of Hurricane Irma, and it’s possible that this viewership could come back this week and help Outlander set another series record for itself. The first episode generated almost 1.5 million viewers (read more about it here), which was enough to make it the most-watched one for the show to date.

Were all things equal versus last week, we’d make a bold prediction this morning that Outlander season 3 episode 2 generates in total 1.55 million and sets another record. (We’re accounting for a small drop-off just because that often tends to happen between premieres and second episodes.)

However, there is another big competitor coming on the air tonight, and it’s something that Starz luckily is not going to have to deal with again this season: The Emmys. We wish that Outlander was nominated for said Emmys, but it does make some sense that they are not given the fact that they weren’t eligible for them. Next year, the show could be in an interesting spot (one that many other shows have been in over the past few years) where it airs against an awards show that could be set to give it a trophy or two during the broadcast. That’d be an interesting dilemma for most Outlander viewers, but we figure the would try to either time things out to check on the Emmys every few minutes or just watch Outlander live and catch up on what happened after the fact.

For this week, we don’t presume that the Emmys will have a huge impact on the show, given that diehard fans are obviously going to pick Outlander over an awards show that wasn’t able to nominate it. Yet, the casual viewership could slip slightly. Also airing tonight: More NFL football, which should serve as the other primary competitor given that the official fall season isn’t underway on the major networks. We’ll see what some of the numbers ultimately come in as on Tuesday — we should get the ratings a whole lot earlier than we did this past week (Irma slowed things down a little bit), so that is something that you should expect here at CarterMatt.

As for the rest of our Outlander coverage…
