Atypical renewed for Season 2 at Netflix
“Atypical is a coming of age story from the point-of-view of Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum searching for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives while exploring the question: what does it really mean to be “normal”? Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as Sam’s mother, Elsa, who is on a life-changing path as her son gains more independence. Michael Rapaport plays Sam’s father, Doug, who desires to better connect with and understand his son. Brigette Lundy-Paine plays Sam’s scrappy sister, Casey, and Amy Okuda plays his therapist, Julia.”
The first season premiered on August 11, 2017 to positive reviews. Not only was the series interesting and different from the typical shows you normally see on television, but Atypical also gives an authentic portrayal of someone on the autism spectrum. Michelle Dean, who received her PhD from UCLA and the UCLA Center for Autism and Research and Treatment before joining the faculty of CSU Channel Island, was brought on as a consultant for the series in order to provide that accurate depiction.
This was a smart move by the creators and the network. There was a time when people didn’t believe that character with a disability could be the main character on a television show and with Atypical breaking that barrier, it’s only right that it continue to give such an accurate look inside the life of a person with autism.
While little is known regarding the details of Season 2, we can guess that it will pick up with Julia’s struggle with her pregnancy now that her boyfriend is gone along with Sam’s continued journey to find love. We also assume the second season will also continue to show Elsa’s affair and the fallout with her daughter, Casey.
Basically Season 2 can’t come soon enough. This dynamic and interesting series is one of a kind so if you haven’t checked it out yet, we suggest you do.
The series was created, written, and executive produced by Robia Rashid (How I Met Your Mother, Will & Grace). Other executive producers include Academy Award winning producer Seth Gordon, Mary Rohlich, and Jennifer Leigh Jason serves as a producer.
