The Blacklist season 5 spoilers: How Tom deals with suitcase mystery

When The Blacklist season 5 premieres on NBC, the suitcase mystery is (understandably) going to be a major part of the story. It was a huge part of the cliffhanger, as Tom Keen retrieved it as a part of the final plans that Mr. Kaplan had put into place.

The question that of course comes now is that even though Tom knows that he has this said suitcase, is he going to be all that aware of what to do with it? It’s one thing to have knowledge, but it’s something completely different to be able to act on some of that said knowledge and understand what’s happening. Tom is a smart guy, and it’s with that in mind you have to think that he’s going to figure it out before long.

As of right now, one of the biggest teases that we have to go on is from executive producer Jon Bokenkamp to Entertainment Weekly, who share the first-look photo of the season below:

“The suitcase is important, but he doesn’t know where that mystery will lead him — and he’s definitely conscious of the fact that answers tend to come with consequences.”

Ultimately, the suitcase mystery is something that the show will probably resolve before too long, just because the sooner that they reveal what’s inside, the sooner that we can start seeing and examining some of its contents. We’re certainly very much stoked to see what’s in there and how the remainder of the story plays out.

So what about the Liz – Tom relationship?

With Ryan Eggold coming back on board the series as a regular, it’s fair to say that we’re going to see a whole lot more of the character on the show than we did at the end of season 4. He and Liz are going to reunite, but because of what the two have been through, Bokenkamp notes that it’s not going to be anywhere near the same relationship that it once was:

“Tom has no idea what he’s walking into, and, in some ways, it’ll feel like the dynamic he had with Liz in season 1.”

We do think that there are going to be many exciting twists and turns for these two, and we wouldn’t have that any other way. You don’t want any relationship to become stale on television, and if you’re going to have Tom back, you want to figure out ways to actively involve him. That’s not always the easiest given the work that Liz does and the relationship that Reddington has with her. He often has to find his own way and his own role.
