The Simpsons bring up solar eclipse, Game of Thrones finale in new video
In the video below from the show’s official Twitter account, you can see Homer lamenting his poor decision staring at the sun during the recent solar eclipse. It’s something that SO many people out there warned Americans against doing, but we’re sure that there are plenty of people out there who decided to do so anyway. (There is even a photo out there of President Donald Trump staring into the sun without glasses, even if someone got the memo and gave them to him sooner rather than later.)
As for Homer being bummed about missing the Game of Thrones finale, who wouldn’t be? The fact that he’s being tormented by Bart is only the icing on the cake.
While this may be a very simple video, we do give the animators at The Simpsons all the credit in the world for coming up with it. Just remember what this video represents for them — a chance to continue getting publicity at a time in which the show is off the air. The amount of people watching live TV is down year to year, and it’s hard to get people to pay attention to a show that, at this point, is a dinosaur. Therefore, the main thing that The Simpsons can do in order to stay relevant in order to stay relevant is create pop-culture parodies and throw references up all over the place, hoping that people catch them and decide to watch an episode or two.
The new season of The Simpsons is going to be premiering on Fox this fall, and we imagine that the show will include political references and other jabs to current events — if the show doesn’t put them on the air, then we imagine that they will do so in some other places here and there. We do know that the show will be the beneficiary of what it always is in the fall: A great lead-in thanks to NFL football, and people who missed the show over the summer. The larger challenge for The Simpsons is instead trying to figure out how to get people watching into the spring. (Luckily, the show does not appear to be in any ratings trouble — there may be some high costs when it comes to making the show happen in 2017, but it does still perform reasonably well all over the world.)
