Saturday Night Live brings Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump to Weekend Update Summer Edition

Alec Baldwin

Well, here’s something that we did not expect when it comes to Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update Summer Edition — a proper cold open much in the way that often see from the flagship show. Specifically, we had the return of Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump!

Ultimately, it made sense why Baldwin would want to come back as Trump in order to mock the latest events in Arizona, where Trump had a rally earlier this week. Baldwin’s version of the character mocked Charlottesville, Mike Pence, and a final send-off to Steve Bannon. This character has been very much entertaining through his appearances on the show, and “Bannon” tonight boasted that he was more powerful now at Breitbart now that his time in the administration is over.

So … did this work? It was an ambitious attempt, but we do think that the comedy was a little scattershot. The audience almost didn’t expect it, and with that they didn’t know where to laugh. Some of the jokes seemed to actually go right over the audience’s head, and there were only a few loud laughs through the opening. Baldwin was still great, but the entire opening felt a tad disjointed.

If there is one real star of the entire opening, we’d say that it was Kenan Thompson as the one black member of the audience, holding random signs saying some really random things, including at one point “Cash For Gold.” This bad us laugh vigorously.

Pete Davidson also stops by

Once the show actually started proper, we had Davidson stop by to give one of his first comedy pieces of the summer. It’s interesting the sort of people we’ve seen this summer — Kenan, Leslie Jones, Pete, and of course Colin Jost and Michael Che. The reason why we haven’t seen more cast members is likely because many of them are off doing other things.

Pete’s piece was mostly about the response to the Colin Kaepernick situation and the protests that have been going on in New York City. This was good satire, especially the part where Pete started talking about Colin’s skill level in comparison to his own on SNL. Then, he said that if it was Kate McKinnon who was taking a big stand for something, people would care as opposed to if he did it. Isn’t it nice to see Pete bringing a little bit of his edge to primetime? We’re sure that some people out there will view this as controversial.
