Ray Donovan season 5 episode 4 spoilers: Mickey and Abby’s quests

Before we dive too much into Ray Donovan season 5 episode 4 and previewing some of what’s ahead there, can’t we collectively spend a moment tipping our cap to the fine folks at Showtime? They’ve figured out somehow a way to brilliantly keep the drama going this season, while also totally faking so many of us out when it comes to the Abby story.

The latest example comes via the official synopsis below.

Ray Donovan season 5 episode 4 synopsis – “Mickey’s screenwriting dreams stall out – until he’s pulled into a gruesome fix for Daryll’s movie star client. Abby starts construction on the new bar while Ray searches for a solution to their problem. Terry tries to win back Maureen one last time; Bunchy’s quest for financial independence gets derailed; and Bridget tells her boyfriend who her father really is.”

If you were to just superficially read that, your first assumption wouldn’t just be “oh, it looks as though the show’s killed off Abby.” You wouldn’t know at all that something has happened to the character. They’ve kept everything quite brilliantly under lock and key, and it also in turn raise another question: What is going to be coming up for Abby in this episode? Well, we’re looking at a different phase of life. Ray Donovan this season is effectively a story that exists within different planes, and shows you a wide array of angles to a marriage. It allows you to see more of the connection between Ray and Abby than you probably did within the past four seasons, and a big part of the reasoning why is because you’re not just getting a glimpse of her in chaotic situations anymore.

As for some of the other stories in this episode, we somehow have a feeling that Mickey is going to get so much more than he deserves, largely because this seems to be the guy’s way. He is not altogether deserving of the majority of the stuff given to him — he is a pretty horrible guy, mind you — but he finds a way to keep rolling. He’s the show’s resident cockroach in that regard. Maybe you love him or that, or maybe you love to hate him.

We don’t think that it necessarily gives all that much away, though it does do a great job when it comes to raising the stakes for some of the individual crises. Oh, and we do think that it will put Abby in a different light even more than ever.
