Big Brother 19 discussion: Why is Raven so frustrating?

Going into Big Brother 19, Raven Walton was not someone at the top of our list of favorites — really from the moment she expressed her Frankie Grande support. Yet, over the past several weeks we’ve witnessed something fairly uncommon — a plummet to the bottom of most popularity polls for a female houseguest. Usually, it’s easy for the fan base to get behind some hulking male blowhard. Think back to what we had with Paulie last season or Austin in season 17. Raven doesn’t fit that time, and on the surface, it felt like she could be well-liked — she was energetic, eager to be there, and seemed like she could be fun based on preseason interviews Frankie love aside.

So what went wrong? Well, there are a number of different things.

1. Inability to play the game – The fact that she willingly ran around saying “woof” as a response to Paul talking about his “dogs” is one of the most pathetic things ever. This is not something she’ll feel good about after she gets out of the house, as are many of her strategic movies. She doesn’t really have any beyond just staying close to Matt and not being a target.

2. The perception of her as attention-seeking – No matter the conversation, Raven does have a tendency to bring things back to her. Even today after the Cody / Josh pots-and-pans incident, we saw her finding a way to insert herself into that and announce that Josh struck her on accident. It may have happened, but somehow it became a big deal and it didn’t need to. Raven hasn’t figured out that constantly standing out because of problems is not ideal for the house.

As a matter of fact, tonight we heard discussions that at one point, there were considerations as to evicting Raven this week — Jessica basically shot herself in the foot with some of her attitude issues.

3. The perception of her as “fake” within the game – Does she act different ways around different people? There are plenty of players who think so, and those behavior patterns are making her hard to trust. As live-feed viewers we also see much of it, and her voice and her inflection often changes depending on who she is talking to. (For a good time, compare her voice in the house to her voice when she goes in and speaks to Julie Chen.)

We know that her frequently mentioning her medical condition ad nauseam is a subject of frustration for some, and you can chime in on that in the comments. That’s not something that we’re interested in getting into here, just because we’re not qualified to discuss her medical history or anything of the sort. Our advice to her, though, is that people like to be inspired by a great story, but only on occasion.
