World of Dance season 2 premiere date: When will Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough be back?
The first thing that we should say on this subject is offer up a few assurances that there will be a World of Dance season 2 in the first place. The show, featuring Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, Ne-Yo, and host Jenna Dewan-Tatum, was renewed earlier this summer after generating strong ratings. We’re going so far as to call it the biggest surprise of the season, given that when the show first started, it was hard to know if the format was going to take off. Reality competition shows had been on the decline for a while, and dance-related shows in general have struggled for years aside from the established hits like Dancing with the Stars. Even So You Think You Can Dance struggled to keep its momentum over the past few years, which is why we had all of those strange themes including the one with the younger contestants.
World of Dance managed to figure out a way to thrive, and we attribute it to a number of things. For one, there were some big names at the top, whether it be Lopez, Dancing with the Stars veteran Hough, or Dewan-Tatum and the immense social-media following that she has — let alone the Step Up crowd that is out there. Beyond all that, it also had a great lead-in courtesy of America’s Got Talent, otherwise known as the #1 show on the schedule.
When discussing a World of Dance season 2, really the first thing that we should note here is that the premiere date likely won’t be until next summer. If something isn’t broken, why fix it? The smartest thing that NBC ever did was not move America’s Got Talent away from the summer, even if it was tempting. They are well aware that what they got is something great, and one of the reasons why is that you give viewers time to miss the show. The same thing has to happen here.
Beyond that, you also shouldn’t move World of Dance from where it sits. It may be tempting to give the AGT lead-in to another new property, but we cannot see a new show faring much better. These shows fit very well together and make up the best night of summer programming, at least in terms of ratings, for any broadcast network. They’d be foolish to try to change that. We anticipate the show returning in late May/early June, and now that it is known as a major hit, we could see a few changes — including potentially more episodes to keep the show around longer.
