Game of Thrones season 7 episode 3 photos: Melisandre’s mission
The image above is one of the two new images from this episode that we’ve got for you today, and it suggests that she and Varys are in the process of a hush-hush conversation. They certainly picked the right place for it, given that nobody is going to hear them over the crashing of the waves. (For the record, the rocky hills make this scene probably the closest that Game of Thrones has ever come to crossing over with Poldark over on the BBC. Now we just need these two to head down towards the beach for a stroll.)
These two characters are probably more alike than either one of them would realize at first, given that they each know far more about the world than they let on and keep a number of secrets. They’ve also figured out some unusual ways to survive. This past episode brought out more Varys backstory than you’ve had a chance to see this season, and that was both fascinating and also heartbreaking at the same time. He’s a man who’s been through a lot to get where he is, and understands now that his entire future relies on him showing undying loyalty to Daenerys after having somewhat of a sketchy past.
The second photo that you can see below features Jon Snow and Davos arriving at Dragonstone, and if there is anyone who is probably happy to see Jon and Daenerys uniting, it is the Red Woman. She referenced last week that there were two people destined to help lead Westeros out of its darkness, and it very well be the two of them. One of them should become the prince/princess who was promised, and the other is a valuable ally. (Let’s just hope they don’t marry…) They need each other, and they each probably realize that on some level even though their goals are not entirely aligned. Jon understands that he needs Dragonglass in order to take out the White Walkers once and for all, while Daenerys is well aware of how much she needs men on the ground in order to overtake King’s Landing. If she overtakes Cersei using soldiers and Dragons from across the sea, this won’t be a successful invasion in the end. It will feel more like the land has been conquered as opposed to them choosing who they feel to be the rightful leader of the Seven Kingdoms.
Now that we’ve spelled all of that out, we have to imagine that neither Jon nor Davos is going to be all that happy to see Melisandre. She’s got a checkered history with the two of them, and Davos hasn’t forgotten the sacrifice with Stannis’ daughter. He’s familiar with Dragonstone, but certainly not this version that he is visiting now.
