Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight? Hopes for next show
Alas, there is no new installment of the HBO series on either tonight of for most of the rest of the month. The host is on a hiatus for the next week weeks, which shouldn’t come as too great of a shock given that he’s had a run of several new shows in a row. It’s a little strange that the network isn’t using Game of Thrones on July 16 in order to further boost their own ratings, but they also probably realize at this point that this is not something that they necessarily need to do. After all, this is a show considered to be a favorite to win Variety Talk Series at the upcoming Emmys, and it has a rather massive audience on its size already. It does very well in terms of HBO viewership, but it’s also incredibly popular on social media after the fact.
So when the show is back, what is going to be the main focus of conversation? We do understand the temptation to continue to make it all about Donald Trump and his Presidency. It makes sense, given that we are speaking about such an unpopular political figure; also, Oliver and HBO are probably aware of how these segments tend to get great ratings and attention.
However, we are at a tipping point when it comes to Trump coverage, and when Last Week Tonight is new again, one of the things that we’re hoping to see is less of Trump (outside of the main segment) and potentially subjects that are more pertaining to global affairs. Look at the segment about the French Election, and of the ones about Brexit and the UK, or even the segment about territories beyond America, one of the few with this show that we’ve watched on more than one occasion at this point. One of the reasons that we loved that segment so much is that it taught us something, and we do appreciate Last Week Tonight arguably the most when it’s informative about subjects that we are otherwise completely clueless about.
Also, it’s that element of surprise that really makes us laugh with this show — take for example the segment that was all about the Bolivian zebras, and then also the piece about Warren G. Harding the wax President from this past episode. For of that. This show is great at delivering great segments, and also delivering them at a time in which nobody can see them coming.
