Once Upon a Time season 7 premiere will feature Storybrooke
Well, the good news to report today is that in some capacity, Storybrooke will return — even if it’s not permanent. In a post on Instagram (see below), show co-creator Adam Horowitz confirmed that the opening scene of the season will, for now, be set in the fictional Maine community that served as the heart of the show from the beginning.
This could be important for a number of different reasons. For one, this could be a way in which to properly say farewell to Jennifer Morrison and her character of Emma Swan. The majority of the reports out there for the time being indicate that Morrison will return in order to properly say farewell to her character, who she played for the entirety of the series to date. This episode could explain why she is not venturing over to wherever Henry is — hopefully, it’s a darn good reason given that it’s pretty hard to imagine this show without Emma. That’s especially true when it comes to the fact that Henry is her son, and she would do anything that she possibly could in order to help him. This is something that we’ve had a chance to learn many times over at this point.
Beyond this, heading back to Storybrooke is essential for extracting the few actors who we do know to be enormous parts of the seventh season, including Lana Parrilla (Regina), Robert Carlyle (Rumpelstiltskin), and Colin O’Donoghue (Hook). Trying to separate these characters from the world of the town could prove tough, especially for people like Rumple and Hook who are romantically attached to characters who won’t be major parts of the show anymore.
How you should approach the new premiere
You almost have to think of it as a separate pilot in some ways, given that this is going to be an entirely different show from the one that first premiered over half a decade ago. We maintain that it’s worth giving a chance, mostly because without Horowitz and Edward Kitsis we wouldn’t have any of these characters in the first place.
At the same time, it’s clear that they will probably have a pretty short leash from some fans frustrated by all of the changes. We do hope that everyone gives season 7 a chance, but beyond that, we don’t know how patient anyone will be.
