True Detective season 3: The wait for further information
So what in the world is happening now when it comes to a third season? Why the wait? The simple answer to that is that “these things take time” and after a rough second season, they probably want to make sure they put together the best product they can. Don’t take the silence from the past three months as evidence that the show is dying out; in the months before that, there was so much silence that it made everyone wonder if the franchise would ever come back. Now, it feels more like the possibilities are endless. Maybe the show finds a way to bring back Matthew McConaughey or Woody Harrelson; or, maybe they devise a completely new story. We vote to bring in a brand new story since we feel that the season 1 story is wrapped up and hope that they work goes into better scripts and less into landing big stars.
The big thing we want to emphasize in this article is patience, while also setting up a timeline for when further information could be revealed. HBO may have a panel at the TCA Summer Press Tour in the months to come, and that could be an opportunity for journalists to ask programming head Casey Bloys what the current state of the development process is. Maybe this means us getting to hear more details, or maybe it means us being told that the project is still “in development.”
One of the biggest things to remember when it comes to HBO is that they have a habit of putting things in some sort of stasis for years before bringing a property back on. Remember that Curb Your Enthusiasm was in limbo for years before its big announced return. Milch’s own Deadwood movie project has been around in the headlines for longer than we can remember. Because of the network’s success and their robust programming lineup, they can let projects gestate until there is the right story and the timing is right. The fact that they rushed True Detective season 2 somewhat was one of the biggest issues with that project; the story felt serious for the sake of being serious, and there was not any sort of resonance that connected with viewers at home.
