American Horror Story season 7: A challenge for ‘election season’
Of course, the biggest challenge of all with it is trying to find a way to create an element of fiction that is somehow stranger than the truth, which has absolutely become all sorts of crazy since months leading up to the election. This is the same struggle that many political shows have had in the aftermath of the election. Those shows were able to go to all sorts of crazy places never thought possible in the actual election. With this current political climate, the sky is (rather unfortunate) the limit.
The second major challenge when it comes to season 7 is merely one that is related to trying to keep up to date with the headlines. If you are dealing with a show about a subject as recent as the 2016 election, you do want to make sure that you find a way to keep things up to date and ever-changing. Hopefully Ryan Murphy and his writers are continually updating the scripts with ideas that reflect what some of the modern-day stories are and what some of the big threats facing society happen to be. If you even keep things firm for a day or two, all of a sudden things aren’t relevant anymore.
We’d say here that one of the big challenges for Murphy is finding a way to make this show appealing to all audiences, but the reality there is that it was never going to be that relevant in the first place. After all, remember for a moment or two that all of his other seasons were polarizing in their own way. This will probably anger many people and satisfy others … that may even be what he wants.
Ultimately, we’d label this as the biggest challenge of all: Murphy remembering in the midst of the hot-button topics that having a great story is what matters most. You want craziness, but having substance for the craziness is equally important.
