Tobias Menzies could appear in Outlander season 4, future seasons

Even though Outlander season 3 could feasibly be the swan song for Tobias Menzies as Frank / Jonathan Randall, nothing is apparently assured. The two characters may still have a future on the show, even in spite of the Diana Gabaldon story moving on past them in the novel Voyager — at least to a certain extent.

In speaking further on this subject as a part of a new interview with TV Guide, show executive producer Ronald D. Moore makes it clear that there are discussions about keeping Menzies in the fold somehow:

“We’ve talked about it … There’s always the possibility of flashing back and revisiting him in either role if we had a reason to. Diana in subsequent books kind of touches back to Frank for various reasons. We might do that. It really depends on how we break that in subsequent years.”

Presumably, it could be easy for Moore and Outlander to just mention Frank here and there in the seasons to come rather than showing on screen regularly, but it’s also understandable that they may want to keep Menzies around. While Black Jack in particular is a horrendous human being, Tobias is fantastic in the role and it arguably marks the greatest performance of his career. Even if you only get him back for an episode or two a season (Menzies is understandably in demand these days, much as any talented actor would be), you still want to make the most of him in some of these appearances. There is already a season 4 on tap for the show on Starz, and beyond that, it’s possible that more seasons could be coming depending on its success and the interest in making more behind the scenes.

You are going to see quite a bit of Frank during season 3, mostly to add some further context into Claire’s life during the time she was in the 20th century. He did help to raise Brianna, and it’s essential to understand his relationship with Caitriona Balfe’s character in order to further understand who she is when she returns to the past in her search for Jamie.

Given Menzies’ ability, it’s hard to object to seeing more of him. Beyond this season (premiering in September), it will be interesting to see how Moore and the writers / producers opt to implement him further.
