Gotham season 4: Pump the Harley Quinn brakes — for now
Sources reportedly told TVLine earlier in the week that there are no plans (for now) to direct introduce a Harley character into the fourth season of the show. Could this change down the road? Of course, given that anything could. There are two reasons why this may not be happening:
1. Logic – If you think about the comics, Harley doesn’t become her alter ego until after interacting with the Joker as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, and there is no one on the show that fits this origin story. Also, the idea here is that Harley Quinn isn’t any older than Bruce Wayne, and we’re not sure we imagine her as the Doogie Howser of therapists.
2. DC? – It’s just speculation, but we do wonder if the comic-book company is being especially protective of this character thanks to their upcoming Margot Robbie film project. She’s one of the most valuable properties that they have, which is why it’s rather interesting that she’s about to have her second movie, but still no movie actually named after her.
The site also confirms that the electrocution of Barbara Kean is not meant to be some sort of reference to her becoming Harley. It’s still not even known for certain that Barbara survives! (Granted, this is Gotham and Oswald already survived getting near-murdered by Edward Nygma. Also, Fish Mooney was brought back from the dead. Also also, Azrael. This sort of stuff happens here all of the time.) Barbara doesn’t need to be Harley, given that she’s a great character on her own right. (We also don’t think that Butch needed to become Solomon Grundy, but that’s a little bit of a different situation become Grundy benefits from that extra backstory in a way that Harley doesn’t given that he’s a lesser-known character to casual fans.
