Why a Class season 2 renewal isn’t happening for BBC
The first reason why this Class is out of session is a pretty simple one: Ratings. The BBC Three series, which wrapped in the UK many months ago, struggled to pull in many streams. Repeats airing late-night on the BBC proper, but they failed in to bring in big ratings there, either. The show was a spin-off to Doctor Who, but there may not have been enough promotion for that even with a Peter Capaldi cameo in mind. The show’s audience fell mightily throughout the season, and anytime that happens, it doesn’t bode well for the future. A network is more likely to give a renewal to a show that has a consistent season 1 audience, given that this means the odds are probably higher that this said show will return for a second season.
Alas, it also probably did not help that reviewers did not love the show. Even in this era where it’s so easy to be cynical and brutal to the press, there is a clear correlation between critical acclaim and success. It doesn’t matter whether you are talking about television or movies — if you look over to Wonder Woman this weekend, for example, you can argue that the strong reviews and positive word-of-mouth were early driving forces to the movie becoming a big hit in a very short period of time.
Unfortunately, Class will go down as one of the more-forgettable spin-offs to Doctor Who, but it would be rather great to see a character or two cameo on the flagship show someday. It did have its merits, and we appreciate the ambition that went into creating some of the concepts and the stories. A series of this kind set in the universe had never been done before.
It should be noted that Class is not officially canceled just yet, but all signs appear that this is definitely going to be the case. Wish it well as the final bell rings and it walks off into the sunset.
