When should a full Absentia trailer be released featuring Stana Katic, cast?

Absentia trailer

Are you hoping for a full Absentia trailer sooner rather than later? Odds are, you’re not alone with that request. The Stana Katic series already has been slated for a fall debut on several AXN networks in Europe, and the hope is that many other territories (including the United States and Canada) will name a home for it in the future.

Let’s say that Absentia does manage to secure a home in most territories for the fall. When would a trailer then launch? A reasonable guess could be in the middle of July. Shows often like to debut trailers a month and a half to two months before a new season starts; a good example of that is Game of Thrones recently revealing its first season 7 trailer prior to its premiere on Sunday, July 16. It’s a little different with network shows because of upfronts, but this is the typical model you see with cable series.

As for what an Absentia trailer should have, here are a few suggestions:

1. The central premise – There are likely millions of potential fans out there who have yet to really hear of the show; therefore, you have to clue them in as to what the story is about. You can easily do than in a 90-120 second trailer without making it all exposition-heavy. Give the bare bones: Katic’s Emily Byrne was missing for several years, and has no recollection of what happened to her. Then, include her family and her career in there somewhere. Leave most of the rest a mystery to keep people excited.

2. Reliance on the star power – Make sure that Katic and Patrick Heusinger get plenty of air time, since they are the two actors really selling the project. In this age of Peak TV, recognizable faces matter.

3. Premiere information – This is why you need to be careful releasing the trailer too early, since ideally you want to have most broadcast partners pinned down in the places you want the show to air. Otherwise, the trailer will come out, and then not know where to see it in their country. They’ll then forget about it, and you stand to lose some viewers that way.

In the end, of course we want to see the Absentia trailer as soon as possible, but we’re fine waiting while Sony works to ensure as many different homes for the show as possible.
