Still Star-Crossed episode 2 spoilers: A marriage, though forced this time

Given that the impetus for Still Star-Crossed in so many way was a marriage by Romeo and Juliet, it only makes sense for episode 2 to feature another one. The main difference this time around, though, is that you’re not looking so much at a union that was born out of love as one that was spawned out of a need to try and repair the chaos in Verona. You have Rosaline on one side, and the Benvolio on the other looking towards marriage as a form of restoration. Will Rosaline actually accept this? That is one of many questions that the show must figure out in this upcoming episode.

Oh, and another upcoming one is rather obvious: Whether or not the show creatively can sustain itself after the deaths of the two most-recognizable characters. This is a show that is a bizarre hodgepodge of Shakespearean tradition and settings with modern sensibilities. It does some things well, but dramatically it does need to figure out its overall purpose within its first few episodes to have any hope of sustaining.

Still Star-Crossed episode 2 synopsis – “With Verona in crisis, Rosaline and Benvolio have no choice but to follow Prince Escalus’ decree to marry one another in an effort to restore peace, which Rosaline struggles to accept. Lady Capulet continues to mourn Juliet’s death, but unsettled by the way she died, is determined to figure out what or who influenced Juliet’s decision. Meanwhile, Livia and the nurse work tirelessly, hiding a secret of their own.”

One other interesting thing worth noting following the premiere is that in comparison to most other summer series, this one is incredibly short. There are only seven episodes of Still Star-Crossed airing, so if you want to get into the show, you better do so quickly. It’s going to be over in a blink of an eye, before you even have much of an opportunity to assess where it has gone.
