Why isn’t Bloodline season 4 happening? Reasoning behind Netflix show’s end

Bloodline season 4

With the season 3 premiere coming up on Friday, it makes sense to ponder the following question: Why isn’t a Bloodline season 4 happening?

If you think back to some of the early days of the series on Netflix, you’ll know that this show had all of the makings of being one that would last five our six seasons at least. It had an impressive cast led by Kyle Chandler, a dark and engrossing story, and the pedigree of one of the biggest streaming providers out there in Netflix. Awards buzz for Bloodline ran deep, and critics were singing the praises of the show to anyone that would listen.

So what happened? It seems to be as simple as the fact that money got in the way (as it usually does). Tax incentives in the state of Florida were one of the reasons why the beautiful show was cost-effective and allowed them to shoot there, but when that incentive program ended, the show’s budget rose to a point where it didn’t have the same long-term viability it once did. There are other shows such as Ballers for HBO that were able to move to another city, since they don’t necessarily have to be fixed into any one place. However, this show is indicative of Florida geographically and culturally, and you cannot really imitate it elsewhere without it being obvious. It would be like Hawaii Five-0 trying to film somewhere else.

In a statement released to Variety at the time the news of the show’s end first came down, Netflix’s VP of original content Cindy Holland had the following to say about it:

“’Bloodline’ season three will be the show’s final season. Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman and Glenn Kessler are thoughtful and visionary storytellers, who lead a prestigious cast, that includes Kyle Chandler and Ben Mendelsohn, who have both garnered two Emmy nominations for their roles on the series. Together, with our collaborative partners at Sony Pictures Television, they created a seductive show that Netflix viewers worldwide love and continue to discover. We are looking forward to the exciting climax KZK have in store for the series conclusion in May 2017.”

While the end of Bloodline is certainly sad, there is a good bit for the show to celebrate and be pleased with, including the fact that it had a chance to bring us some richly compelling stories that we couldn’t get enough of.

There will be further coverage of Bloodline season 3 in the coming days as we will be reviewing all of the episodes of the finale season (we should be posting one a day). For more on that, just head on over to the link here. (Photo: Netflix.)
