Legends of Tomorrow season 3 spoilers: How Rip Hunter returns

Rip Hunter

At the end of Legends of Tomorrow season 2, Rip Hunter departed the team of heroes, saying that he no longer had a need to be there. So where will you find him in season 3? Early indications do suggest that Arthur Darvill will be back in another prominent role, but one that will be very much different than the one he played in the first two seasons. This time around, he could be an adversary of the team — at least in that he wants to make sure that they don’t violate any more rules after completely screwing with the timeline in order to stop the Legion of Doom.

Late this past week while at upfronts, The CW revealed the official synopsis for the upcoming season below:

“After the defeat of Eobard Thawne and his equally nefarious Legion of Doom, the Legends face a new threat created by their actions at the end of last season. In revisiting a moment in time that they had already participated in, they have essentially fractured the timeline and created anachronisms – a scattering of people, animals, and objects all across time! Our team must find a way to return all the anachronisms to their original timelines before the time stream falls apart. But before our Legends can jump back into action, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and his newly established Time Bureau call their methods into question. With the Time Bureau effectively the new sheriffs in town, the Legends disband – until Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell) discovers one of them in the middle of his well-deserved vacation in Aruba. Seeing this as an opportunity to continue their time traveling heroics, Sara (Caity Lotz) wastes no time in getting the Legends back together.”

Whoever this person is in Aruba, isn’t Rory going to get pretty angry about this? Probably, given that he’d made it pretty darn clear already that this was his own dream locale. (Not that Mick needs any more reason to be angry, given that this is more or less his default mood.)

The premise for this season feels pretty interesting; to us, one of the most interesting things about this season could be watching these characters try to go back and live normal lives. Maybe there’ll be a crossover here and there with the other superhero shows (it’d be nice), and then the gang gets roped back together for some further missions. What remains unclear for now is who the main villain will be given that Eobard is gone and the other members of the Legion are now back in their own timeline.
