Once Upon a Time season 6 finale review: Adult Henry; happy endings
By and large, the battle for Storybrooke and the characters’ future ended with many people finding happiness. Take, for example, Regina starting to find more of her place, Emma and Hook moving forward in their lives together, and even Rumpelstiltskin and Belle getting a second chance to raise Gideon as their own child.
Are there major issues that the show has to address moving forward into season 7? Absolutely. For one, there are still creative challenges in finding a way to write off some characters such as Emilie de Ravin’s Belle and of course Jennifer Morrison’s Emma. For the time being, this was a start, and the closing montage especially was beautiful and easily could have served as a series finale.
If you love these characters and prefer to think of this episode as a series finale rather than the end of a season, it’s easy to do that after this hour … even with the cliffhanger ending.
About that cliffhanger…
The hour ended with getting a chance to see a young girl in Lucy pay a visit to Henry in Seattle — where he is now an adult! Not only that, but she claimed that the two parties are related!
There are a number of ways in which Lucy could be his “daughter,” even if he doesn’t know about her. Maybe he was never told by the mother, or maybe something happened to a certain part of his history. Nonetheless, the rumors of Andrew J. West playing an adult Henry are clearly true, and this sets the stage for a whole lot of interesting stuff moving forward through the rest of the season.
While this was a predictable twist, there is a nice quality to the finale going full-circle with Henry and getting a chance to experience the magic through a new set of eyes.
Final verdict
Overall, this episode was definitely emotional. It wasn’t perfect (there are many minor characters in need of closure), but what it achieved more so than anything else was providing a way to see some key stories set up for a potential seventh season. Grade: A-.
