NCIS: Los Angeles season 8: Sam’s wife Michelle and the big picture
Specifically, the entire NCIS franchise may have an issue when it comes to killing off spouses / partners of main characters. This begins back with Gibbs on NCIS, but he is not the only example of this. Look at what happened to Bishop’s boyfriend earlier this season, what’s happened with Director Vance, and what could be happening to McGee over on that show. Meanwhile, you can also sort-of classify what happened to Ziva in this same group given that she and Tony were ultimately soulmates with each other and she’s been allegedly killed off as well (we say “allegedly” because we like to believe that she escaped death and is somewhere in the world in hiding).
The apparent death of Michelle on Sunday’s new episode of NCIS: Los Angeles only further adds to this trend, but we may consider this to be the most shocking of any of the loved ones we’ve seen die on the franchise over the years. One of the biggest reasons this was a jaw dropper was simply due to the fact that we’ve seen Michelle off and on so much over the years, and this close to the end of the season, it’s not something that we we thought the show had to do. It was devastating, but it does add some high stakes to Sam and his attempts to shut down Tahir and his entire operation.
Sometime, TV shows make big moves like this as a means of signifying that nobody is safe, though here they probably didn’t need to do this in order to prove the point. It’s not that NCIS: Los Angeles over the years has never killed anyone, though this may be one of the more significant deaths. Based on the information that is out there, it feels safe to say that LL Cool J’s character is going to be motivated more than ever over the course of the final episode to get revenge. The question that you’re left to wonder is this: How far will he go in order to make it happen? Is he going to be willing to sacrifice his own soul (or his job) for the sake of getting what he wants?

They forgot to mention Lucas Black characters girl friend in the first season of NCIS NOLA. Another casualty of the kill off.

Killing Michelle was totally unnecessary- they could have just as well have her be injured from oxygen deprivation- Sam’s motivation would have been the same. Don’t understand why writers are pushed to make every episode “dramatic” –

They could easily bring her back as they did Oliver Queen and I believe they will. When I watched them find her supposedly deceased, I drank 73 cups of hot coca through a Krazy Straw.
Ridley Scott wanted to bring back Maximus (Gladiator) and probably still will and I believe Michelle will be back, otherwise the price of coca is going to go through the roof.

TV has a history of killing off girlfriends and spouses of main guy characters. This is nothing new and it’s completely predictable.

I watch this NCIS because I love the characters. I feel Michelle’s death was unnecessarily and will add a dimension to Sam that fans will not like. I agree that NCIS spouse deaths are getting very redundant.

I agree with Tony McDay and what most of the others are saying. This was totally unnecessary. There have been entirely too many killings of loved ones of main characters on the NCIS shows. It’s getting boring and depressing. If the writers can’t come up with better storylines maybe they need to just end the shows while they are still sort of on top or find more creative writers. Very disappointed!

What they should have done is faked her death, put her in witness protection and given Sam full Carte Blanche to go after Tahir. They could have kept it as a surprise in future episodes as she pops in again after Sam “avenges” her death and sticks it to the terrorists. That way she is safe and the rest of the bad guys are non the wiser, NCIS could save face and maybe safe the show from going into the obvious direction. They haven’t really been very creative with their shows any of them for that’s matter this season. I for one am disappointed.

I believe every angle of family life is destroyed by the writers. They really have no concept of a family relationship surviving in the appeal of this shows, for those of us that despite the violence, we still have hope. I watch this show with my family, but now I just don’t know. Revenge continues to promote hate and not good law enforcement. I am deeply sadden with this show last night! It wasn’t good, at all.

It was so unnecessary. I think the writers need anti depressants. The entire NCIS franchise does this too much.

Hopefully this is just a ploy to catch the bad guy by making them think Michelle has died, when in fact she is still alive and will show that when they catch all the bad guys so Sam’s family can come out of protection. One can only hope. The writers of this series can spin it this way if they want to. Hopefully they will…..

Agree with you, other wise all the ncis spouse or mates deaths are getting redundant as if they’re running out of storylines.

I too am sick of writers using these unneccery deaths-they really don’t know we love these characters? They must think letting her live would make them look weak! I will watch next week as we know he will get revenge, but at what cost?

NCIS LA is basically a safe space for people who can’t stand the fact that there aren’t enough terrorist attacks against America. After a week of no terrorists attacking the US, NCIS LA offers reassurance to those who want proof that evil foreigners are after us non-stop. Having evil A-rabs and other foreigners killing off loved ones just makes it better.

You forgot to mention when Lasalle’s GF was killed off in NCIS NOLA– I am sick of it. I’m ready to walk away if they kill off McGee’s love. Its just too much.

Excellent episode and wasn’t surprised by her death at all. There has been spoilers for months now saying something will happen that will change a character forever. So when Michelle shows up in this episode, she is as good as gone from the get go. (But really she hasn’t been a part of the show much anyway). I can only wish the same can happened in NCIS for McGee but I bet it won’t happen.

This was really stupid, and unnecessary. Michelle was Sam’s foundation, and now he is left to raise two children.Director Vance had children, but he was not a field agent like Sam. I just don’t get ,why the writers felt the need to go in this odd direction?
