Designated Survivor season 2: New showrunner named (if show returns)
Per a report from Deadline, for The Good Wife executive producer Keith Eisner is going to be coming aboard the Kiefer Sutherland ABC series as a showrunner in the event that the series does get picked up for a second 2. While this is not something that is 100% confirmed at the moment, some of the early indicators out there suggest that this is something that will be coming. The ratings are significantly better than most of the other drama programming on ABC, at least anything other than the stuff executive-produced by Shonda Rhimes.
Meanwhile, to go along with this further just remember that Sutherland remains one of the biggest stars on TV, and this show also remains a solid contributor when it comes to DVR ratings. Basically, every little sign suggests that ABC is going to want the show back. The fact that there is already a showrunner set only serves to push that point along further.
Eisner is going to be replacing Jeff Melvoin, who served as the showrunner for the first season and will remain on board the show as an executive producer moving forward. What may shock many people out there is the revelation that Melvoin was ALREADY the third showrunner on the series in just a good year’s time. It’s hardly strange that there are showrunner swaps on a scripted show early on in its run, but to go through this many is pretty remarkable. Remember that The Walking Dead fans completely lost it when there were two swaps over the course of a few years leading up to Scott M. Gimple taking the road.
You should know one way or another about a Designated Survivor season 2 renewal come later this month when ABC holds its official upfront presentation in New York City. Not only will they set the schedule, but there will also probably be further questions answered about this and many other shows.
There are still several more episode of the first season to come, so remember to keep watching Wednesday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. You can also share some of your thoughts on what to expect in the comments.
