Britain’s Got Talent to reportedly keep Golden Buzzer during semifinals

While it may be rather simple, the Golden Buzzer remains one of the best changes to the Britain’s Got Talent format ever. It’s a signal that basically makes someone’s dream into a reality — all of the stress of making it to the live shows is gone, and it’s instant publicity for whoever gets it. We’ve seen both Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon press it so far in the season, and there are three more that will be pressed before auditions close: David Walliams, Amanda Holden, and then Ant and Dec.

Apparently, the show is now looking to expand this further outward into the live semifinal shows. According to a report coming in via the Mirror, the show is looking to shake things up when it comes to having a Golden Buzzer one more time. This will allow there to be an opportunity to decide on some of the finalists before the British public even votes.

As for our reaction to this twist, we’re rather torn. While we do in some ways love the prospect of another Golden Buzzer given that we’ve watched these videos an unhealthy amount of times, we also know that there is such a thing as over-saturation. Part of what makes the live shows important is that it gives the power over to the public. If you allow the judges too much control, it changes dramatically the entire structure of what your show is meant to be.

Ultimately, we’ll see how this goes this year. There are times when we do often see the public make a bonehead choice, so if this is something that happens, it could be better for keeping the great talent around. These are the sort of things that can be tried once here and there — the American show does allow more Golden Buzzers beyond the auditions, but it’s during the Judge Cuts round, a part of the show we rather like that doesn’t exist in the UK due to their season being a little bit shorter in length.
