Once Upon a Time season 6 spoilers: Hook’s Neverland return

Neverland

We know that Captain Hook is currently in the midst of a pretty epic journey on Once Upon a Time in terms of him finding his way back to Storybrooke and to the love of his life in Emma Swan. We’ve seen him aboard the Nautilus, on an island with Ariel, and we’re gearing up now to see him in Agrabah.

Moving forward, how about bringing Hook back to Neverland? At this point, you do just have to consider the idea of Colin O’Donoghue traveling to every realm humanly possible before making his way back. It does give you a great sense of the show’s history, and it also allows him to revisit some elements of his past. For him to be back in Neverland in particular, this is an opportunity to see him in a place where he wasn’t the best version of himself in the slightest. Yet, it’s almost necessary to explore this in order to properly chart the character’s growth, and where he could be heading now as a better person. It’s contrast, and sometimes contrast between the past and the present is a great device to facilitate storytelling.

Speaking on this subject further to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Edward Kitsis had the following to say:

“He was Captain Hook working for Peter Pan in Neverland for many, many decades … Although we killed Pan and freed the Lost Boys, not every Lost Boy decided they wanted to come with; there’s always the true believers. My guess is they don’t have a nice homecoming for him.”

Seeing this homecoming, though, should be a big part of the fun. Obviously we’re not going to have another chance to see Pan on the show given that he’s no longer among the living, but this part of the story was about a whole lot more than that. While it was an imperfect arc of the story in our mind, there were so many important events that occurred there in between the Hook – Emma relationship evolving and Rumpelstiltskin getting to spend so much time with his father. Pan was also one of the most concentrated villains that we’d had an opportunity to see on the show at that time, and Robbie Kay was brilliant in the part.
