David Boreanaz lands new series following Bones series finale

The Bones series finale is airing on Fox Tuesday night, but it appears as though David Boreanaz won’t be out of work for very long at all — provided that his latest pilot gets a green light.

Per a report from Deadline, Boreanaz (who is also known for his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) is set to star in CBS’ upcoming Navy SEAL project as a character named Jason, the well-versed and powerful team lead. He is technically replacing Person of Interest star Jim Cavizel, who left the project over creative differences.

The Jason character’s been part of dozens of deployments, and given some of the tough nature of his life, he’s certainly got a good bit of trauma and problems that he may have to work through as a result of that. He may be a hero, but that does not mean that he is void of any flaws or obstacles.

This series already has assembled a rather impressive cast elsewhere, with a group that includes Max Theriot, Neil Brown Jr., A.J. Buckley, Toni Trucks and Jessica Pare of Mad Men fame. While there are no guarantees in the pilot world and CBS has very little real estate for the coming season, we’ve got every reason in the world to have confidence in this going through. The show has a capable lead with a proven fan following, and courtesy of NCIS we’ve seen already that there is a rather hefty audience out there for shows that honor the military.

Also, we would assume that there is some crossover potential between this and the NCIS franchise given that you are talking about shows that are reasonably similar when it comes to revolving around the Navy. Without having seen any of the new pilots, we’d say right now that this and the SWAT revival starring Shemar Moore of Criminal Minds fame are the two projects over at CBS that we’re the most confident about in terms of getting series pickups. This is a network that knows what works for its base and sticks to it. They often don’t try to reinvent the wheel, largely because they’ve seen a few times that there isn’t a whole lot of merit in doing that.
