Arrow season 5 spoilers: Is a big Oliver Queen secret coming?

Just when you think that Oliver Queen didn’t have any further secrets to tell on Arrow season 5, we’ve got an example of the latest thing rising to the surface. Apparently, there is something more to this character even still than what we know, and we have to assume that it stems back from his time in Russia. (This is something that will be explored at length on Wednesday’s new episode in particular.)

In setting up what could be one of the most epic reveals that we’ve seen on the show to date, executive producer Marc Guggenheim passed along the following message in a new interview with TVLine:

“I don’t think Chase wants to show Oliver who he really is. Chase wants to get Oliver to admit who he really is. That’s the mystery of [Wednesday’s new episode]. Oliver is being told by Chase, ‘Confess your secret,’ and hopefully the audience is going, ‘He already knows Oliver is the Green Arrow, so what secret is there?’ And there is a secret.

“I don’t think it’s a secret that anyone is expecting, but it’s going to have ramifications for the remainder of the season, if not the whole series.”

The thing that we wonder in regards to this secret more so than anything else is what would make this so important and so dramatic that Oliver would continue to keep this a secret from the team, really regardless of how he’s seen every other secret of his work out over time. So many different ones have all went up in smoke for the most part, so why would he keep this one, thinking that it would work out differently in the end?

This is the biggest challenge when it comes to secrets within this show — you may not want someone to know about them, but at the same time you eventually learn that someone is going to learn and there’s really nothing that you can do. Yet, we also understand where Oliver’s coming from given that this is someone who’s done so many terrible things over the course of his life that if we were to introduce himself to anyone with a laundry list of his past missteps, they’d probably run the other way screaming and it’d be hard to blame them.
