Hawaii Five-0 season 7 episode 23 review: Danny wrestles with his past

Hawaii Five-0 season 7 episode 23 review

There are not many episodes of Hawaii Five-0 season 7 left, and basically what this means is that the majority of them from here on out are going to be big ones!

If you love action, it’s pretty clear to us that you must’ve loved what the show brought to the table over the course of tonight. After all, we at one point had an epic ambulance-chase scene that revolved around a person in a coma, and Lori Petty from Orange is the New Black there playing a nurse. (There seem to be more people with serious guns on Hawaii Five-0 than almost any other crime show out there — kinda crazy given the size of the state.)

The origin of the case tonight stemmed back to a part of Danny’s past, one of the final cases that he worked on the HPD before he ended up becoming a part of the Task Force. He was pulled off of the that case, and tonight, he learned that a key witness was actually still alive. However, they were on the north shore in a coma, being cared for by Petty’s character. The more that we started to learn about this case, the more we started to understand what it meant to him to get justice. Part of the reason why he blamed himself was that in the past, he didn’t get the key information because he was fighting on the phone with his ex-wife in the process.

After a huge stand-off following the ambulance chase, Danny was able to ensure that the patient and his witness stayed alive. The irony here is that said witness didn’t have to even wake up for the team to catch the bad guy!

This was a great Danny episode as a whole, and excellent performance from Scott Caan to boot. Also, we had some lighthearted moments tonight as we learned that Danny was terrible at building children’s furniture. He should just stick to fighting the bad guys. The good news is that the kid loved it all the same, and this was yet another reminder of why we love the Danny that we’ve come to know over the course of the show. He may not have realized how much he needed a little bit of Ohana in his life at the time he first came out there, but he certainly understands it now.

Also, how about that Steve / Danny scene from the past in the closing minutes?

Overall

This episode was really exciting from start to finish. It was great to have Petty on board, and have the first story in a good while that cast a spotlight on Danny and his history. This was certainly a worthy return to the show after a little bit of time off of the air. Grade: B+.
