MasterChef Junior season 5 episode 6: Michelle Obama’s mystery box
During this challenge, the First Lady (for the record, she was the First Lady at the time in which she filmed this video) encourages the kids to make a meal following some of the practices that she set up for healthy eating — ones that includes filling up half the plate with fruits and vegetables and encouraging dairy and whole grains. Many of the kids seem to be excited to take on the challenge, and we know that when done right, healthy eating can be just as delicious as unhealthy eating.
Easily, the funniest part of the video is young chef Donovan proclaiming that not even Michelle Obama can convince him to cook with vegetables. Remember when President George H.W. Bush showed no affinity for broccoli? (Okay, none of these contestants are going to remember that.) This is almost the MasterChef Junior version of it. To be fair, we wouldn’t want to cook veggies, either. Not following the rules of the challenge, though, is probably something that won’t get you a lot of love from the judges.
If this is like any other challenge on MasterChef Junior, the winner will probably get either immunity or some sort of leg up in the next challenge. Or, maybe both.
Enter Julie Bowen
The Modern Family star will be appearing in the episode for the elimination challenge, and you can see in the video below her encouraging the cooks to make a meal in honor of their mother. It’s a smart idea to give the kids this sort of inspiration, and it’s also smart solely from the vantage point of getting a chance to understand more of who they all are as people in addition to being contestants as people.
These are the challenges that get us the most invested in the season. It’s a little more challenging finding a rooting interest when you’re watching a bunch of people all collectively make the same exact thing.
