‘Arrow’ season 5: Where in the world is Willa Holland’s Thea?

There are many mysteries when it comes to “Arrow” season 5 onscreen, especially when you are thinking in terms of Prometheus and the character underneath that mask.

However, there may not be a bigger mystery out there at present than the one regarding the whereabouts of one Thea Queen, who has disappeared off of the map over the past few episodes of the show. Tonight marks the third installment that has aired in 2017, and it is the third straight time in which the new Chief of Staff at Mayor Queen’s office has been missing in action.

The show seems to have come up with a reason convenient way to write her out, as they’ve said that she is off more or less engaging in important business out of town. There is something viable to this, mostly in that Oliver as a Mayor does need a great deal of help. However, at the same time it was certainly odd to see Captain Lance leave rehab this week and not have her around to support him, given that she was one of the reasons that he was able to get the support he needed. It was one thing to not have her suit up as Speedy nearly as much as in the past; it’s another thing altogether to write her out of the show.

There doesn’t seem to be any reason for the character’s absence beyond the fact that the story’s veered in a direction where she’s not a key component in what is going on. What’s sad about this especially at the moment is that when you look at the landscape, Quentin Lance is the only other major character who is familiar with who Oliver was prior to him being stranded on the island — and he didn’t know him all that well other than being the father of the woman he was with. Thea is that connection to his early days, and the family that he once had. She’s essential to the and to grounding Oliver as a character.
