‘Saturday Night Live’: Why Priyanka Chopra of ‘Quantico’ should host in season 42
Last weekend, we formally kicked off a new SNL Wishlist series where we set out to raise one question: Who are some of the best TV stars out there who should host “Saturday Night Live“? There are hundreds of scripted shows on the air, and with that the NBC show should be more than happy to accept more people from this genre than they have, especially when you consider just how high-quality most television is these days.
One of the things that we did when we first introduced the series last weekend was took some feedback from our readers as to who they would like to see in the role. One name popped up time and time again more than any other: Priyanka Chopra of “Quantico.” She’s someone we were circling, as well, as a great potential host, and we’re happy to spotlight her further today!
Why she should host – All you really have to do here is look at the resume. She’s someone who can act, crack a joke, dance, and sing — basically, she can do everything that you would want a host to be able to do. We feel like she’d be fine to make fun of herself, and there are certainly some great “Quantico” parodies that the writers could come up with. We especially like the idea of hosts with a global perspective in 2017, given that there is so much going on in America right now that having an outside perspectives on the craziness is nice. It’s a reminder of global humanity and understanding.
Also, Chopra would be the first Indian-born host in the history of “SNL,” and there is something really fun about that happening on the same season as Aziz Ansari becoming the first Indian-American host just last month.
Could it happen? – If Priyanka was signed up, NBC would have to know that she’d pull enormous ratings around the world. Isn’t that one great reason to do it from a business point of view? There may also be a convenience to it given that she already works in New York City, so the logistics of working it out with her “Quantico” schedule would be a little bit easier. Remember that Kerry Washington has hosted the show before while working on “Scandal,” and that show films in Los Angeles. It also, like “Quantico,” airs on a rival network in ABC. These things can be worked out if “SNL” wants you badly enough.
There’s also one other thing to take into consideration with Chopra as host — “Baywatch.” There are times when “SNL” likes to schedule hosts around big tentpole releases, and with this set to be one of the biggest movies of the summer, doesn’t it make some sense to book her for one of the final shows of the season? Maybe you could also get a Dwayne Johnson cameo in there, which would be great given that his “SNL” episodes to date are nothing short of spectacular.
Do you want to see Priyanka host “SNL” in the future? Be sure to share some of your thoughts in the comments, and head over here to get some more news when it comes to “Saturday Night Live.” (Photo: NBC.)
