Ratings: ‘Training Day’ starts weak; ‘Powerless’ so-so; ‘Riverdale’ drops in episode 2
We’ve seen over the course of the past few years that while it is possible to launch a new hit property (think “This Is Us” over on NBC), more often than not what we’re seeing are shows having a tough time getting out of the gate. Some of them turn out to be rather good, but they just can’t find the right audience coming out of the gate and this proves to be rather problematic for them in the future.
The latest victim of that could be CBS’ “Training Day.” There’s still a chance for it to be a great show down the line, but after starting off with a 0.9 rating, you already have to worry for its future. The same goes for “Powerless” over at NBC, which started with just a 1.1 rating.
There is one exception when it comes to the new series premieres last night, and it’s courtesy of “Superior Donuts,” which ended up drawing a 1.9 rating and over 10 million viewers for CBS. This was a great start for the show, but remember the caveat that it aired after “The Big Bang Theory” and that does always tend to inflate things when it comes to the numbers.
Read on for some more news when it comes to various shows and their performances on the night.
Fox – “Hell’s Kitchen” drew a 1.1, while “My Kitchen Rules” did a 0.7. Both shows were down, and we have a feeling that the latter probably won’t be coming back based on some of these numbers.
CBS – “The Big Bang Theory” won the night with a 3.1; the two shows we haven’t mentioned yet are “Mom” (1.6) and “Life in Pieces” (1.3), which were both down in comparison to some other recent episodes.
NBC – “Superstore” scored a 1.2, which means that at the very least “Powerless” kept the majority of its lead-in on the night. “Chicago Med” (1.2) held pretty firm, while “The Blacklist” (0.9) dropped from its recent outing. “Chicago Med” is the show we really give the most credit to, as it tries to stay afloat despite not really having a lot of support elsewhere on the lineup.
ABC – The Shondaland lineup fell across the board, though we’re sure ABC isn’t too angry with “Grey’s Anatomy” at a 2.3, “Scandal” at a 1.8, or “How to Get Away with Murder” at a 1.3. “Grey’s” is the only one of the #TGIT shows to not win its timeslot, but even with it this is still a really strong rating.
The CW – “Supernatural” held steady at around a 0.6, while “Riverdale” predictably dropped in its second episode down to a 0.4.

Last night I watch Chicago Med (one of my favorites, Blacklist and I watched Training Day although I am not sure if I like it I will try one more time next week. They don’t have the chemistry that Lethal Weapon has. I also watched Hell’s Kitchen but I am really getting tired of that so it wouldn’t bother me if they took that off the air. As far as CBS goes I don’t watch comedies as I don’t really find them funny and ABC I didn’t watch at all. I am though looking forward to some of the new shoes that have been advertised and hopefully there is a hit among them otherwise it will be nothing by Netflix or Amazon Prime for my tv watching.
