‘Ransom’ episode 5 preview: Michael Ironside to guest in ‘The Enemy Within’

Ransom -While “Ransom” may not be gifted with the greatest timeslot in the world, it’s a show that is about perseverance both in terms of its content and also how it will continue to fight for its place on CBS. On paper, this show still feels like a great fit for the network, even if it’s a co-production and they don’t have the same ownership of it that they have with many of their hits. It’s a chance week in and week out in order to see Eric take on challenging cases and negotiations, while at the same time understanding more about his life and also how he got to the place he’s in today.

Next week on “The Enemy Within,” you’re going to get a chance to at least see some of this play out courtesy of an appearance of (the great) Michael Ironside, a guy with a person connection to Eric, who could prove valuable on the case. Whether or not that turns out to be valid is something that we’re going to have to wait and see.

Synopsis – “Eric is brought in by his ex-boss, Freddie Woods (Michael Ironside), from the FBI to negotiate with Charlotte Walker (Jessica Parker Kennedy), an extremist from a racist group threatening to set off bombs all over New York City.”

Just in reading that, you’ve got a sense that this will be a challenge for both of them — but we feel like the real story here is about investigating Freddie and Eric’s relationship just as much as it is the negotiation. Obviously, we have a hard time thinking that bombs are going to explode all over the five boroughs.

Ratings Update – We’re probably going to give you a small one of these every week, just to see precisely how this show ends up faring in this risky Saturday timeslot. Last week, we actually saw it improve slightly from 3.83 million viewers to 3.61 million. There was also an incremental increase in the 18-49 demographic, though not enough to seem evident in the raw data.

The show’s future on CBS will likely depend mostly on two things — whether or not the show performs internationally, and then also whether or not they consider these ratings satisfactory for Saturday. Personally, we don’t think they’re terrible when you look at other competition on the night; it’s just hard to know precisely what it is they are expecting.
