An ‘Empire’ spin-off is coming — but will it surface in season 3?
It shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that Fox wants more “Empire.” It’s the highest-rated show on Fox by a mile, and even if the ratings are not anywhere near what they once were, that doesn’t change its standing as a hot property.
With this in mind, executive producer Lee Daniels is making it clear that there will be a proper spin-off launched at some time. The question here is mostly a matter of timing. Speaking per TV Guide, here is what he had to say:
“I can officially say that we will be having a spin-off. … We’re in talks. We’re finally figuring it out. It takes a minute, you know? We just really had to build the foundation of Empire, so we then try to figure out what that B-chorus is. It looks like it’s going to happen.”
There is still theoretically enough time for this spin-off to be announced and planted within “Empire” later this season, but there’s also a chance that the show may wait until next year in order to factor this into the equation. Time is really the key here. If you rush out an idea that doesn’t work, it ends up not only being a waste of your time, but it can dilute and damage the brand that you do have.
Now, let’s going ahead and take on the “Star” issue — we don’t technically think of it as a spin-off, even if it is set in the same universe. It was developed as more of its own thing, and throwing the two shows together a little bit earlier this season was done more as a marketing move to help convince “Empire” viewers to stick around and watch the new show. So far, “Star” is faring decently with a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic for its most-recent episode. If it stays at around that level, it’ll get renewed. However, if it doesn’t you might as well go ahead and sign off on the show’s death warrant.
