‘Arrow’ season 5 spoilers: Will Felicity’s family return?

The fifth season of “Arrow” entered its midseason hiatus with Oliver and Felicity in a far less happy place than they appear in the photo above. They’ve remained apart romantically since the fourth season, but the problems they’re encountering now are exponentially worse than a mere breakout. Oliver killed Felicity’s boyfriend Billy Malone in what was a trick constructed by the Big Bad Prometheus. While she may not be angry at her ex-fiance for what happened, you better believe that she is going to be out for revenge, and may be a little bit more determined and aggressive than we’ve seen her through the series so far.

So while you will be seeing a darker side of the role moving forward, don’t expect Felicity to suddenly be turning into a completely different person, either. Speaking (per Collider) while at the TCA Winter Press Tour on the subject, show executive producer Marc Guggenheim had the following to say:

“This is something I was talking to the writers about in the writers’ room — Felicity is a wonderful character because she brings some light into the show. So it’s a darker — it’s an edgier story for Felicity, but at the same time, it’s still Felicity. You want to keep the character.”

One other thing that Guggenheim noted is that we are not going to be seeing prominent appearances from Felicity’s parents in the immediate future, largely because they want this story to stand on its own and be different than some of the others that we’ve seen over time. Do we think that the Calculator and Donna Smoak will be appearing at some point in the future? That seems likely, but there doesn’t need to be all that much of a hurry for it to happen.
