‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ season 4: Exec staying mum on Chelsea Peretti’s future

99

Given that Chelsea Peretti is fantastic and that Gina is one of the best characters on Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” it almost goes without saying that she is one of those characters we want to see back on the show every single season. Yet, we at the same time have to face the possibility that she’s dead right now … or also wounded within an inch of her life. She was hit by a bus! In the real world, this is not the sort of thing you come back from. Obviously, we want her to be alive, but we also don’t want this to be one of those corny dream sequence cliffhangers; if it is, the real Nine-Nine may need to come arrest us after the fact for being drunk and disorderly. (We have a mental image of needing about five bottles of booze within three seconds of a “dream” reveal that hopefully isn’t going to happen.)

In the wake of said bus-hitting, executive producer Dan Goor isn’t making it clear one way or another if Gina will survive; yet, he did tell Entertainment Weekly that the entire inspiration for the cliffhanger ending did actually come from a certain line that Peretti’s character spoke:

“We wrote a joke for Gina, in which she tells Charles that she’d rather get hit by a bus than receive another text from him … After we wrote it, I thought, ‘She should get a text from Charles and then instantly get hit by a bus.’”

Someone clearly didn’t teach Gina to not stop and read texts in the middle of the street, but you can’t be all that shocked by this. For one, we’re relatively convinced that Gina thinks of herself as immortal and therefore probably thought that nothing bad was going to happen as a result of this. Also, she’s probably done this a thousand times and never was hit before. She was playing the odds, and the odds lost this time. (However, the bus won — we don’t think it’s going to be out of condition for too long one way or another.)

Peretti hasn’t spoken out at length about the storyline just yet; however, she did teach us that there is a bus emoji, so that’s something.
