CarterMatt Awards 2016: Klaus, Caroline (‘Klaroline’) of ‘The Originals,’ ‘The Vampire Diaries’ win ‘Ship of the Year
We all have characters on TV who we want to see together at some point, and that is really what the ‘Ship of the Year category of the CarterMatt Awards is all about! We nominated five character pairings who many people out there love, but who weren’t together at the end of the year. For the weeks that followed, we saw a wide array of votes come in from all over the world.
We’re happy to now etch the results in stone, or at least as much as you can do something like that given that we’re writing on the internet: Klaus and Caroline of “The Originals” and “The Vampire Diaries” are the winners for 2016.
This was one of the closer votes of the awards this year, at least in terms of fandoms who came out to support some of their favorite ‘ships — while Klaroline had a pretty commanding victory with 31%, we also saw close to 25% for Oliver and Felicity of “Arrow,” 21% for Stiles and Lydia from “Teen Wolf,” and then also 19% for Liz and Reddington for “The Blacklist.”
So why did Klaroline manage to come on top in this category? Much of the thrill of the fandom comes from seeing the passion that existed within these two characters whenever they have been together over the years; unlike many other ‘ships, you really have to make the most of your moments here, given that there are not all that many of them. We’re not even sure if they will have another scene together in 2017, but that doesn’t change the way anyone feels about them. Joseph Morgan and Candice King have done such an incredible job with these characters, giving them chemistry and making fans want to root for them to be together, even when the story veered off into some other directions.
In the end, congrats Klaroline fans — here’s to hopefully another great year of fanart, fanfiction, and all of the other great things that you do in support of ‘ship.
Earlier today, we announced that Clarke & Lexa a.k.a. “Clexa” of “The 100” were the winners of the CarterMatt Award for Best Couple, which is meant to recognize the couple that either ended the year together or would have were it not for outside factors.
