Should ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13 bring Jackson, April back together?

Mrs. Carter: Is it time for a romantic reunion on “Grey’s Anatomy“?

Let’s preface everything that we’re saying here with the following reminder: We cannot control the story, and with that it’s hard to accurately say one way or another whether or not Shonda Rhimes is going to write the April – Jackson relationship in a way moving forward that actually brings them together. As a matter of fact, this show has a track record of splitting people up, and then having them be done. Take a look at Cristina and Owen, or more recently at Callie and Arizona. Meredith and Derek are also apart, but we don’t consider that the same thing given that it’s hard to imagine that relationship ending in a split if it stuck together — even if they were going through a lot.

Yet, it’s almost because of the pattern of former couples staying apart that we want to think that these two have a chance. They’ve been through a lot, but at the same time there is one thing that binds them together beyond their child, which is the most important and obvious thing: Respect. They haven’t stopped caring for each other, and while they have their fair share of frustrations, there’s no hate here at this point. There was deep resentment back after the time that April went away and Jackson later shut down, but some of that has now dissipated.

They’ve already lived together again since the split, they’ve co-parented, and in the process maybe they are starting to realize that there are many reasons why they fell in love in the first place. Do they still need to talk through plenty of things to get to a better place? Absolutely, but we do think there’s at least a chance of some sort of happiness now that some of the tension is relaxed and things in their own lives are more stable. Also, this relationship could give fans hope at a time in which it’s been challenging. For most of the season we’ve seen a lot of strife between Owen and Amelia since their wedded bliss wore off, and Alex is still seemingly deciding what he wants to do in terms of his own future — and if there could ever be something for him and Jo ever again.
