‘Top Chef: Charleston’ episode 3 video: A treat for all superfans
There is a new episode of “Top Chef: Charleston” coming up in a matter of hours on Bravo, and judging from the new sneak peek below, there is going to be one culinary showdown during the episode that makes a particular group of fans rather happy: The superfans that have watched the series for years.
The sneak preview gives you a pretty front-and-center look at the elimination challenge, one where teams are looking to impress the judges — but also fans of the show at the same time. It’s not entirely clear precisely how these teams were picked this time, but if this is similar to many other team challenges, the end result is probably the same: The judges will pick the worse overall team, and then one person from that group will go home. While the fans in attendance for the challenge may have input, we don’t imagine that it will directly determine the outcome.
This is hardly the first time that the show has thrown superfans into one of their challenges, and it’s easy to understand why they’re revisiting it. After all, longtime fans of the show are the ones who are going to be the happiest to be there, and you do want to cultivate as much of a friendly, enthusiastic environment as possible for people watching your show. If viewers at home see people wandering around who are super-excited to be at the challenge, they’ll probably be super-excited while watching.
Of course, the downside of having a superfan presence for the chefs is that these are people who probably have a certain degree of culinary refinement, and know a little bit better when something is working — and also when something may leave a thing or two to be desired. Sometimes, having the judges as critics is bad enough, and these people may put that over the top.
