ABC gives ‘black-ish,’ ‘Speechless,’ ‘American Housewife,’ and more additional episodes
So far this year ABC is enjoying yet another solid season of strong ratings for the majority of its comedies, and as a result of that, they are understandably doing everything that the can to make sure that they are spotlighted further.
Sources confirm that both “black-ish” and “The Goldbergs” have been picked up for two additional episodes, which brings their overall total to around 24. Meanwhile, “Speechless,” “The Middle,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” and “American Housewife” have all been granted an additional episode that will bring their total to 23.
The big implication that comes from this move is mostly that these shows are faring well enough that ABC sees no reason to worry about spending a little bit of extra money, and in turn, this means that there will be more Tuesdays / Wednesdays without repeats on the air.
In case you are wondering about another one of their signature shows in “Modern Family,” that show may be sticking to 22, which is the same number that it had last season. When you’ve got actors who are making more money on your show and also have busy schedules — as is the case here — odds are that it is a little more difficult to extent the order down the road. Every other season of the show before season 7 had that extended 24-episode order.
Ultimately, we will find out when we get around to April or May if all of these shows are renewed for additional seasons, but for the time being, it’s relatively easy to be optimistic. These are series that are all doing something right — specifically, we do think that “Speechless” is one of the funniest and most-heartfelt shows out there this fall.
