‘The X Factor’ UK: Matt Terry performs ‘When Christmas Comes Around’ winner’s single (written by Ed Sheeran)
There was a good bit of confusion tonight as to the winner’s single for “The X Factor,” given that for the first time in a while, the final two didn’t get a chance to perform it individually. Instead, the winner of the show had a chance to perform it after the results were read, which was somewhat of a risk. Ultimately, you have to remember here that the earnings for the song go to charity, and you want to get them as much exposure as possible. Also, for the winner, this song launches their career, and you want to do what you can to give your best performance. After THIS much emotion, isn’t it a challenge to expect these people to put their emotions in check to deliver a stellar performance? We think so.
The winner’s single is called “When Christmas Comes Around,” and it was written by Ed Sheeran. It’s a track that definitely has the “Thinking Out Loud” singer’s signature stamp on it when you think about the lyrical content of the song, and also its acoustic feel. When the show didn’t make it clear that the earlier performances had zero affiliation with the winner’s single, we were worried that either Matt or Saara would be stuck with something dated and uninteresting — we’re not as worried now. This is a chance for Matt to sell a lot of singles at a crucial time of the year. If he can get a #1 spot with this song, it could turn him into an almost-instant star.
It’s going to take a few more listens before we know how we feel about this song as a whole, but we give him all the credit in the world for keeping things together and delivering a lovely rendition in spite of our aforementioned fears — it gives us confidence that this could be a holiday classic.
Also, kudos to Saara Aalto for delivering one of the classiest second-place speeches in the show’s history. You can tell that she and Matt are very good friends, and she was happy with him. We certainly think that she’s going to be fine in her career given her creativity and drive.
