‘Teen Wolf’ season 6 facing huge drop-off in live ratings; what happened?
It was announced before the start of season 6 that “Teen Wolf” was just about at the end of the road; unfortunately, we cannot report that the show is going out with a bang. Three episodes into season 6, and the better equivalent is more of a whimper.
Collectively, the show is averaging in the live+same day viewing figures just a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and around 470,000 viewers, which is a decline of over 50% in each measure from where we were during the entirety of season 5 on average. If you compare these three episodes to just the first three episodes of season 5, the decline is closer to being around 60%. It’s a stunning drop-off, especially for a show that is this far along into its run.
As for what the reason may be behind this, there are a few interesting theories worthy of some speculation here. One of the biggest prevailing ones may very well be the sole fact that this season is airing in the late fall for the first time ever. If you look back at season 5, the first half of it aired in the summer while the second half came out during the winter. These are months when younger viewers are either out of school, or are not preoccupied with a wide array of other things. Airing during November in particular is dangerous, given that you have many students studying for end-of-year exams / midterms while some others are simply focused on the holiday season instead.
Could there be viewers out there disinterested on some level given the absence of Dylan O’Brien from much of the season? You have to consider every possible variable, but we do know that he is going to be coming back at some point this season.

What?! Dylan Obrian has been in the first 5 episodes. That’s not being “absent” The entire show was revolving around him.
The ratings are low because the story was garbage.
Nothing is happening. Scott goes alpha once in 7 episodes and just to close a gate.
The Hellhound transforms only once only to get pushed outside where he immediatly reverts back.
How about doing something really cool like letting Mason find out that he can transform into The Beast of du Gevaudan when he’s pushed to his breaking point? Maybe he can do that to save Corey. Instead, Mason’s power is his ability to sense the aura of Corey. Lame lame lame.
How about utilizing Liam’s forgotten “IED” power? Where he goes berzerk and turns into a wrecking machine?

low ratings come from years of queer baiting, terrible writing, plot holes, and the ridiculously stupid antics of its star, Tyler Posey.
And lets not forget the complete disapperance of previous staple characters like Derek Hale, aka Tyler Hoechlin who has completely abandoned the show and gone off to far greener pastures with other former teen wolf actors like Daniel Sharman, and Colton Haynes.
The show reached its peak in season 2 and 3, and its been on life support since then.

The low ratings don’t have anything to do with the absence of Dylan O’Brien. The season was heavily promoted as a Stiles-centric season. Many people expected Dylan to be in every episode. Dylan was in the first episode and the ratings for this episode were a series low. The time between seasons was just too long, last season was awful just like season 4 was awful.
That’s why people didn’t tune in. They had Dylan in the episode but people didn’t bother to watch it because they were tired of Teen Wolf’s stupid plotlines and watched other shows now. If casual watchers stopped watching because of no Dylan, the season premiere with Dylan would have had good ratings. But it had abysmal ratings for a season premiere. After that we just had the normal ratings drop for the episodes after a premiere.

It was widely reported long before the season actually premiered that Dylan would only be in a couple of episodes. Many Teen Wolf fans knew that and were online talking about how sad they were about it.
Many people didn’t watch because they knew there’d be next to no Stiles. The time between seasons was longer this time, but if people really wanted to watch the show, they would have made sure to tune in regardless of the break.
The casual watchers wouldn’t be as likely to stop watching because of no Dylan in the first place. The fans that have been with the show since the beginning would. Scott and Lydia are not nearly compelling enough to hold the show by themselves.
Season 4 did suck, but the ratings were still decent. Season 5 the ratings dropped dramatically, and this season they almost couldn’t be worse. Season 5&6 have the same problem. They focused too heavily on sh*tty 2nd gen characters and the plots feel redundant. The ratings being so terrible this season was a combination of both an anticipated absence of Dylan O’Brien and a yet-again crappy looking plot line.

Teen Wolf execs already knew this would happen. Fans have been saying for 2 years now that if Dylan O’Brien left the show, they would stop watching. So they decided to end it when they knew they weren’t getting him back. I can’t say I’m sad about it ending, either. I don’t recognize the show at all now from the first 3 amazing seasons.
