‘The X Factor’ UK postmortem: Why Honey G was eliminated
Sometimes with these “X Factor” postmortem articles, it’s challenging to figure out precisely what happened leading up to a singer’s elimination from the show. This time around, it’s really not. Honey G is someone many people wanted gone from the very beginning of the show, and it was really only a matter of time until it happened.
Before we say anything else, we will give Honey G a little bit of the benefit of the doubt here for being an especially good sport about everything on her way out. This was almost exactly what we predicted: She would make it fairly far in the competition, get a ton of headlines, and then go home when she could not be viewed as a serious part of the competition anymore. This is similar to what happened to Stevi Ritchie, or what transpired back when Rylan was on the show before he got into presenting. These sort of acts always leave at around this time.
We don’t think we need to give a point-by-point account of what happened here, given that the main reason Honey G went home is just that her talent level was inferior to the rest of the show. She wasn’t always on the beat with her raps, and during her recent “Black Beatles” performance she barely even performed most of the song and focused almost entirely on the Mannequin Challenge instead.
We do think that hip-hop isa viable genre that can be presented on the show moving forward, but you need someone with a clearer point of view to come out there and really work on delivering a message. You need to showcase your heart in addition to your talent and deliver on a number of mind-bending performances that get people talking in a way that could yield commercial success. Honey was great for the sake of the show, but despite her pleading after the show, we just don’t see her getting a record deal or getting music out there in that way. Hopefully, if nothing else she’ll make a nice little career out of herself as some sort of occasional performer and TV personality. That really seems to be her ceiling from this vantage point.
