‘Masters of Sex’ season 5: Renewal odds, hopes for Michael Sheen – Lizzy Caplan series
Tonight on Showtime, the end of the road is here, at least for the time being, when it comes to the fourth season of “Masters of Sex.” It’s at this point fairly obvious that Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson are on quite a tumultuous journey together; we’ve seen them certainly go through highs both personally and professionally, but at the same time there is rather-clearly a fair share of lows in here as well for the two of them.
Moving into the finale, we know that marriage is something that is now in the cards for Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan’s characters; we cannot confirm as of yet if they will actually end up tying the knot this season, but we know that it happens in life.
So when it comes to the show’s season 5 renewal odds, we do believe that the series is in a rather interesting place. Showtime hasn’t announced much of anything in regards to the future of the series, but we’re feeling reasonably optimistic at present that it will get at least one more season to wrap things up. While they did end “Penny Dreadful” earlier this year almost without warning, that was an extremely unusual circumstance. This is a show with a significant amount of awards prestige behind it, and we think it would benefit from a send-off tour in the press.
One thing we will say to the contrary, though, is that if Bill and Virginia do get married tonight, you can argue that we’re at a reasonable place for the show to end. We have a hard time thinking that this will carry the two of them through all the way to the end of their marriage together, so the challenge for the writers / producers is coming up with the right time to walk into the sunset. Hopefully, over the course of the coming months we’ll understand the show’s future all the better.
