‘Major Crimes’ season 5 spoilers: ‘American Crime Story’ actor to rival Sharon Raydor
One of the major stories that is going to be playing out on the second half of “Major Crimes” this season will be learning precisely who will be in charge moving forward in the position of Assistant Chief of Special Operations. This was a position held by Russell Taylor until we rolled around to the end of the recent season finale, and now this is a role that the show has to figure out how to fill moving forward.
We know that Sharon Raydor will be one key player for the job, and we’ve also learned that Camryn Manheim’s character, the Deputy Chief of Operations, is also going to be a contender for the job. You can now add a third name to that list, as well.
Per TVLine, Leonard Roberts, who is coming off of playing Dennis Schatzman on a different sort of crime series in “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story,” is going to be checking into the series as a completely different opponent. Specifically, he will be playing the part of Leo Mason of the Criminal Intelligence Division.
What seems to make this story interestingly from this standpoint is how much the show looks to be keeping things as realistic as possible. You have three candidates here who are all qualified on paper for the job, and to a certain degree, they’ll likely be willing to fight for it. Our hope is that Sharon will end up getting it, while at the same time continuing to have a key part in the show. With the promotion would potentially come more responsibility and a better life, and after paying her dues for so many years and climbing the ranks, isn’t she deserving of that?
The second half of “Major Crimes” season 5 will be premiering at some point in early 2017.

Sounds interesting. Let’s get some good stories involving the choice of Taylor’s successor. The introduction of somebody challenging Sharon and the team would be great. I hope it won’t end up being Fritz Howard. Obviously, nobody wants him to be an adversary. And him being Mr. Nice Guy all the time might not be that interesting. There were some attempts to create minor disagreements between him and Sharon in season 3 when his health deteriorated simultaneously. But both these storypoints disappeared miraculously. Unfortunately, I might say. Could have been interesting.

I hope it’s interesting. I like on the job tension, especially when it’s different from what we typically tend to see with the case of the week.

I’d like that too. The team is a very tight knit family-like unit. Some tension there could be interesting, and exerting it from the outside is probably the better choice than creating an intrinsic conflict.
I think the show is at it’s best when it comes to character development. Even more so when this can also be achieved in the cases that have to be cracked. It worked pretty well with the last case at the end of this summer. However, that story was told in four consecutive episodes, thus providing time for more complex characters, twists and turns to evolve. It was amazing.

I guess the choice of Taylor’s successor will depend on where this show will be headed in the long-run, right? Like: WILL THERE BE A SEASON 6???? That still remains undecided, or at least uncommunicated! And since we’re at it: When will the back half of season 5 actually air? Yet another mystery….

Would be nice to know something more definitive than just some rumors about a premiere date for the back half sometime in January, right?
