‘The X Factor’ UK postmortem: Why Four of Diamonds were eliminated
Unfortunately, Four of Diamonds couldn’t quite pull out an ace on “The X Factor” this weekend — and yes, we’ve been waiting for a while to use that one. They were eliminated, and this makes this the first time in three weeks where we were not surprised by who eventually left at the end of a results show.
Were they the worst singers left in the competition? Absolutely not. We’d obviously say Honey G was worse, but she hasn’t been in the bottom three once (!) so far this season. We’d also throw Ryan Lawrie in there, but he’s got the teen voting block down pat at this point, and even when he’s been in danger, the British public have thrown out there the Lifeline Vote in order to properly save him.
In this weekly postmortem piece, let’s try to figure out why precisely Louis Walsh’s girl group, who was added to the competition after Brooks Way withdrew the first live show, was sent packing after a few weeks in jeopardy.
1. The late addition – There wasn’t as much of a way to hype the group up, and they ultimately had limited screen time and promotion in comparison to the other candidates. This hurt them from the get-go, and they weren’t able to compensate for it over time.
2. Not enough individual personality – We could not name for you any of the members of the group right now, and part of the problem there may be the show’s own editing. We would’ve rather seen pre-taped segments about them individually and what they brought to the group over the generic stuff that we got. You have to relate to people in order to want to root for them.
3. Not enough energy – We wanted to see the four ultimately have even more fun on stage than they had; even their “Bang Bang” performance, while decent vocally, just didn’t have the fire that the performance from 4th Impact had of the same song last year.
4. Not enough time to mesh – Some groups like One Direction can flourish fairly quickly despite being thrown together during the show. Others take more time. This group was formed before the audition room stage really began, and we don’t quite think they had the time necessary to really cultivate who they were and they missed out on that leadership. We almost feel like they would have been better suited if they were formed later in the show and had direction from the get-go. By the time they got it from Louis, they knew that they weren’t his first choice.
